A charming residence for this stunning bed and breakfast in the heart of Naples
More than 400 years ago one of the most important houses of the Neapolitan nobility was built on the road which is known today as Spaccanapoli: Palazzo of the Dukes Carafa di Maddaloni. The wounds of world war II bombings and those of the earthquake of 1980 have heavily weakened the palace causing a state of deep sufferance. However, a part of this palace has come back to life and it has become the seat of annually concerts and events of high artistic value. Music has come back at Palazzo Carafa di Maddaloni and the great musicians with it, together with guests, soirées and art. Today everyone can be plunged in this magic atmosphere by staying in the same rooms where history, for 400 years, has weaved its plot In the red room finds place a precious library of 1500 volumes of musical scores which belonged to the Neapolitan composer Mario Pilati (1905-1938), dead in young age and considered one of the most important personalities of Italian music of the first half of '900. Among the scores, some of which never published, are beautiful art nouveau prints, a large collection of operas and chamber music, some manuscripts and several autograph.. dedications addressed to the composer during his career. Among these, are the ones of Ildebrando Pizzetti, Alfredo Casella, Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, Libero Bovio. The library is now centre of studies and researches of Italian music of XX century and it can be consulted on appointment. The green room, ancient music hall today dedicated to Pergolesi, is the place where ''Il Circolo Artistico'' regularly meets. The Circolo is a instrumental chamber music group created by the pianist Dario Candela. In this room, crowned by a splendid fresco trompe- l'oeil, the musicians meet to rehearse, and the concerts of the ''Chamber Music Festival'' which starts in spring take place here. One of the aim of the group is the revival of the Italian chamber music of early '900, proposed together with the best known repertories with prestigious co-operations such as the ones of Aldo Ciccolini, Roberto De Simone, Alain Meunier, Antony pay. The Artistic Circle is moreover working at an ambitious project of integration between classical music and popular tradition. A little, big jewel box full of charm and magic, a ''Maison de charme'', more than a bed and breakfast, at Carafa di Maddaloni rooms with all kind of conforts are available, furnished with antiques, and made precious with floors of '800 and refined objects collected during the centuries. And from the windows a glimpse at the big fresco of the entrance hall: the Cariatidi Palazzo Carafa di Maddaloni is located in the heart of the historic centre of Naples, surraunded by monuments, churches and ancient palaces: between Spaccanapoli (which goes up to Castel Sant'Elmo ) and via Toledo, main road with shops, banks, travel agencies, restaurants and pizzerias. Nearby is the picturesque fresh market of Pignasecca.The underground trains 1 and 2 , the funiculars, the train to Pompei, and the port to Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento and Sicily are at close distance.
