A charming guesthouse as an ideal base from which to discover and enjoy the Maremma region of Tuscany
Unique Panorama : in the heart of the Maremma region, the Montarlese estate has been inhabited since ‘700. The guesthouse is on a top of a hill with a panorama extending from the Amiata mountains to the picturesque hills housing the medieval cities of Magliano and Scansano and continuing on to the Tyrrhenian sea with a view of the islands of Giglio and Montecristo as well as the Argentario promontory. The guesthouse, located in the centre of a 91 acres estate, is surrounded by centuries old olive trees and by 12 acres of vineyards from which we produce our red full bodied Morellino di Scansano and our white fruity Bianco Pitigliano. The environment is unspoilt and it is common to come across a fox, a deer or watch the hawks hunting. The air is Maremma-clean as the nearest factory is about 60 miles away! The stone and wood farmhouse has been finely restored and is well in tune with the colours of the surrounding landscape: all materials and furniture are strictly organic and of a simple elegance, efficient lighting prevents light pollution. We offer double rooms with a queen size bed and en-suite bathroom or suites with bedroom, bathroom and dining room with a well-equipped kitchen. Extra beds for children are available. Eco-lodges are carbon free: we believe it is our responsibility to protect the environment while ensuring the maximum comfort of our guests. Exclusive usage of renewable sources (electricity and hot water from the sun, heating from wood), use of rainwater, exclusive use of natural materials for the construction (wood, stone, cork for thermal insulation, hand made clay bricks) and finishing (paints with no chemical components) all fabrics in natural fibers and electric circuit breakers in every bedroom, are just some of the elements which have qualified us for the award “Toscana Ecoefficiente” and for “Legambiente Turismo”, the leading Italian organization for eco-sustainable tourism. The rooms are free of TVs and other electrical appliances (hairdryers are available upon request) to help maintain quietness. We offer guests a telescope to explore our clear black night sky.
What to do: In the summer miles of sandy beaches, in the spring and autumn there are hiking trails leading across the countryside, in the winter the warm waters of Saturnia offer restorative pleasures. Take a stroll through our vineyards or just relax at sunset while enjoying our complimentary wine aperitif from the terrace garden. We offer bicycles and will organize tours on horseback or rounds of golf at the two nearby 18-hole golf courses. We will also help you to plan parties or work seminars. Thermal Spa: 20 minutes away one finds the Saturnia spa and the natural cascades with 98°F sulphur spring water.
Nature: at 30 minutes from the property is the largest natural park in Tuscany, the bird watching paradise of the Burano and Orbetello lagoons, as well as the Etruscan –made tracks in the Pitigliano caves.
Seaside: a 30 minute ride will find you at the long sandy beaches of Giannella and Feniglia, or the secret coves of the Argentario mountain reaching up from the sea.
History: Etruscan and Roman ruins, the middle age cities of Capalbio, Sorano, Pitigliano which is a UNESCO protected world heritage site.
Wine and food: famous red Tuscan wines, sheep cheeses and wild boar dishes will accompany your stay.
