Roman Villa at the Casale
Sumptuous Roman Villa in Sicily
The Roman Villa at the Casale, whose ruins are located near Piazza Armerina, Sicily, is part since 1997 UNESCO World Heritage site. Was discovered, on the recommendation of the locals, by Gino Vinicio Gentiles, who began the exploration in 1950. The sumptuous building should be referred back, according to scholars who are based also on the style of many mosaics, in the first half of the 4th century.
The remains show four blocks with different orientation but connected to each other:
the imposing entrance to three arcades with courtyard horse-shoe; the central unit, built around a square courtyard with garden; the majestic trichora ovoid that follows a peristyle surrounded by another group of rooms; the thermal baths, with access from the peristyle.
The floors of most of the rooms are covered with mosaics made with colorful tiles.
