The area had been inhabited already in the 2nd century AD by the people from Carnia. Then came the Romans and afterwards the Longobards. It is also sure, that the Patriarch's authority was present in the Castle of Pradumbli (deriving from “Pratus Domini”, God's meadow, i.e. Patriarch's meadow) before 1225 and there were some manorial lands in the hamlets of Sostasio and Osais ealier then 1275. Important were the donations and privileges granted to the people from Carnia by the Patriarch Gregory of Montelungo in 1258.
