Excavations on the Castellaro show this to be an ancient town of pre-Roman origin. The territory separates the Cinque Terre and Levanto from the Vara Valley and was already settled in prehistoric times: some grottoes have revealed traces of Iron and Bronze Age settlements. In Roman times, Pignone was a junction for many important military and commercial roads: up until 1966 there was still a Roman bridge connecting the two banks of the river.
