The Comune of Palaia is characterized by an extremely diversified geographic conformation.
Bounded by the Chiecina Stream to the east and by the Roglio Stream (the main tributary of
the Era) to the west, and crossed by a road that in the Etruscan period led to Volterra,
Palaia boasts a very old history and a largely unspoilt natural environment. Visitors are
offered the opportunity to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of times gone, made more
precious by the presence of multiple environments characterized by geomorphological,
botanical and faunal aspects of great interest. These include the spectacular ‘calanchi’
(gullies) of Toiano, green rolling hills covered with olive groves, vineyards and poplar
woods, Mediterranean woods rich in fauna and mushrooms.
