The village of Montemassi (part of the territory of Roccatederigi), is fortified place which probably dates back to 10th century. Until the middle of 13th century, Montemassi was owned by the Aldobrandeschi family. After almost a century of landlords’ changes ( from the Aldobrandeschi to the Pannocchieschi families) and usurpations by the Cappucciani family from Sticciano, Montemassi was besieged by the city-state (comune) of Siena which conquered the village after a huge battle. This event was painted by Simone Martini in a fresco displayed in a room of the Public Palace of Siena. In 1632 there was the creation of the Marquesate of Montemassi and Roccatederighi, under the Malaspina family. This marquesate ended in 1789 and in this year Montemassi stopped being a feud.If you start going up the road you will meet the village of Roccatederighi, placed on its stones, known even before the year 1000.
