Firenzuola is one of the widest Communes of the so-called "Tuscan Romagna". Its territory includes the mountain valley of the Santerno river, beyond the "Appennini" mountains, justifying the popular rhyme according to which it would be "Il bel paese che il Santerno bagna (The beautiful country that the Santerno river bathes)", where "Si parla Tosco in terra di Romagna (People speak Tuscan in a place which is Romagna)". The town was wanted by Florence for the strategic function of "new land", guardian of the fundamental road that connected Florence to Bologna, in a territory until then in the hands of the powerful Ubaldini family, hostile to the Florentine Republic.
