The territory of the Municipality of Gambassi appears to have been inhabited since the Neolithic era, but the highest population was registered in the Etruscan-Roman epoque, as evidenced by the remains found in various areas. In antiquity, it was certainly “terra di pass” (a passageway) for the Etruscans on their way to the dominion of Volterra, for the Romans in relation to the Via Clodia between Siena and Lucca, and in the Early Middle Ages, for travellers and particularly for the pilgrims passing along the Via Francigena.
